Macbeth

Act 11 - Journal
Some murderers talk to themselves about the crime they are planning to commit or claim to hear voices or see visions spurring them on. Do you think Macbeth might have been temporarily insane when he murdered Duncan?

  1. I think that Macbeth could have been temporarily insane while murdering Duncan because he talked about killing him and had no problem saying he would do it, however during the murder he would talk to himself contemplating if he should do it or not and curse himself under his breath. He did Duncan after, but felt as if he should kill again to ease his mind on what he has done, even though he couldn't stand to go back and see what he has done. No one in their right mind would even think about murdering someone anyway, however Macbeth's actions were ones to describe someone who is insane.

  2. There are many reasons why readers would think that Macbeth was temporarily insane when he murdered Duncan. He would think and talk to himself often before the murder, trying to figure out if he was actually going to go through with it. Lady Macbeth talked him into it, but he seemed to still feel uneasy about the deed. Macbeth also envisioned a dagger floating in the air before he murdered Dunkin. In my opinion Macbeth was not insane during the murder of Dunkin, it was just his self consciousness getting the best of him, which is causing him to talk to himself, see visions and question whether it was the right thing to do.

  3. Anyone in my mind who has visions or thoughts on murdering someone, and actually does it is insane. He might have not wanted to do it at first, but in the end he fulfilled his quest, and the only way he thought he could get over it was to kill again. He was not sane when he murdered Duncan because if he was there wouldn't be a murder to talk about and it wouldn't have even been mentioned.

  4. I think that Macbeth was sane when he murdered Duncan. Even though he saw a dagger, does not nesecarily mean he is insane. Some people handle stress differently. The thought of murdering and innocent man, and the stress of the consequences if he is caught, and also the fact that he is acting against his morals and ethics (as we seen Lady Macbeth force him into the act), can all add up, and as the time draws nearer and nearer to the murder, more stress builds up, until his brain reacts by producing hallucinations.

  5. I don't think Macbeth was insane, I believe he was just a weak man who was tempted, and instead of waiting, he chose to make it happen immediately.

He was motivated by a great prize, the kingdom of Scotland, and pushed by his wife. I don't think he was insane, though the pressure seemed to get to him, that would explain the appearance of the dagger.

  6. I agree that Macbeth was not insane while he was murdering Duncan. We are all faced with situations where we would do anything to get what we want if it was truly what the heart desired, Macbeth was pressured into acting upon these thoughts. Although I do not believe Macbeth was insane during the murder, I do think that all the pressure and consequences that came from the murder had a great affect on Macbeth. All these things quickly drove him insane.

  7. I agree too that Macbeth was sane when he murdered Dunkin, but afterwords the guilt and pressure of the deed started to change him. I do not think Macbeth would have even gone through with the murder of Dunkin if it hadn't been for Lady Macbeth, but afterwords he made a decision himself to have Banquo killed.

  8. Obviously mac beth was insane! Are YOU sane? I hope so. Would YOU go and kill someone just to get ahead? I hope not. Whether or not he was insane is up to the reader entirely but i have come to the conclusion he was quite insane. The reasons being he killed someone no one sane could do that out of cold blood or unless kill or be killed situation. He must of been quite fond of his cousin being he was his cousin and all and he killed him just to get ahead, while being told by WITCHES(another reason he is insane for believing witches) that he would be king someday. Even lady macbeth could not kill him and we thought she was the insane one thoughout the play. This is why he was insane!

  9. A Person who may hear voices or who talk to themselves about how and when they are going to commit murder has to be, obviously insane for various reasons, one because you have to be insane for committing murder in the first place and two a person who hears voices has to have mental issues, and or actually voices are talking to them.

  10. Of course he was temporarily insane! Before he went to murder Duncan he saw a floating dagger that was not actually there.Do sane people see imaginary floating objects? I didn't think so. To just kill a man to get ahead with no logical or sane reason behind would only further the believe that Macbeth was losing his mind.
